I was curious to know what social media and other types of websites allow one to choose Other, trans* options (genderqueer, FTM, MTF, TG, and so on), and/or to leave the gender or sex field blank are out there? Here are a few that I’ve found - please do let me know about any others:
DeviantArt: Allows ‘Other’ and ability to show or not show your selection on your profile
DIASPORA: Gender is a text field!
Flickr: Allows ‘Other’ or ‘I’d rather not say’ (the latter leaves the field blank on your profile)
Google+: Gender field. Allows ‘Other’ and one can toggle who can see your choice: anyone, extended circles, your circles, or only you
Wikipedia: If you are a Wikipedia contributor, you can utilize Userboxes (other language listings accessible on the left sidebar) on your profile, which allow for a great deal of gender, sex, and orientation description. See also here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:ISD/Userboxes/Sexuality#Gender_identity Some of the userboxes that have been made with English descriptions, many with images, include femme, boi, two-spirit, kathoey, hijra, transgender, transsexual, genderqueer, androgynous, intersexual, bigender, trigender, pangender, third gender, “This user has no gender identity, nor a sexual orientation,” and “This user is still unsure about their gender identity.”
Queer-specific websites tend to allow for more options as well, such as dot429 (allows for MTF, FTM, Intersex, and Queer) and Laura’s Playground (gender selection includes androgyne, crossdresser, FTM, FT?, intersexed, MT?, transsexual, and transgender).
Some websites might have two options but allow you to not select either (such as Goodreads) or if there is a selection, it has little or no effect on one’s interactions on the site, such as Raptr and Livejournal, which allows Unspecified/Other, but it doesn’t display anywhere, to my knowledge.
‘Other’, the predominant alternative selection on social media sites, can be, well, othering but it is a step in the right direction. It is also worth noting that there have been are a few work-arounds out there that can create more options, such as Facebook: Gender Neutral (video showing how to use Firebug to hide gender on your profile and have posts refer to you with “they/them/their”) OkChoices (script for OkCupid giving additional options for gender, orientation, and status).

I remember people had to campaign for DeviantART to implement a more egalitarian gender selection. Good thing they listened.
